Monday Reads: The Ocean At The End Of The Lane by Neil Gaiman.

I have a pretty serious book habit: maybe 2 or 3 a week, fiction and non fiction, plus the books I’m reading for research purposes; but every now and then a book comes along that leads me off into another world, and this is one such book. I read it in one sitting, scrambled my daily routine just to finish it, ignored the cat and forgot to ring my mother. And it was all worth it; the layers were textured and complex, the story sweet and compelling, and the characters made my inner 8 yr old want to grab her little back pack and hand whittled spear, and head off to the ocean at the end of her lane. It’s a book full of magic and written with such a delicate touch that its enough to make an amateur writer throw her recently finished chapter out of the window.

Neil Gaiman is good, dammit. Too good. In fact I wouldn’t be suprised if he hadn’t had a little help from the Hempstocks…

“Monsters come in all shapes and sizes. Some of them are things people should be scared of. Some of them look like things people used to be scared of a long time ago. Sometimes monsters are things people should be scared of, but aren’t.”
